Editorial Review:

Amazon.co.uk Review:
Was it homesickness that compelled long time Los Angeles resident KD Lang to fashion her one woman campaign for Canadian nationalism, or just plain good sense? As an organising tool, all Canadian content has long been a mainstay of the Canadian Broadcasting System but few have selected their material with such a fine hand and a high aesthetic. The ex-patriot singer has taken great pains to create a sophisticated homage to her Canadian roots, elegantly reinterpreting 11 songs penned by some of her more illustrious countrymen (and women) such as Jane Siberry, Joni Mitchell, Neil Young, and Leonard Cohen. The idiosyncratic chanteuse turns Cohen's "Bird on a Wire" into an aching monochromatic lament, exploring new tributaries of pain that didn't exist in the original, while recasting Neil Young's "Helpless" into haunting anthem of memory and comfort, all the while sounding anything but helpless. Hymns of the 49th Parallel is a gorgeous love letter to her brethren, complete with an intelligent and understated orchestration. --Jaan Uhelszki

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Stunning
This is one of my favourite albums. KD Lang's interpretation of these wonderful songs is breathtaking. Her voice is beautiful and the arrangements are gorgeous. I cannot recommend this album highly enough.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - amazing suprise

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Hymns of the 49th Parallel - a must have kd lang CD
I adore this album. I am new to k.d. lang's work, and after seeing the BBC4 Sessions concert televised earlier this year; I decided to purchase this album - along with other titles in her back catalogue.

There are several tracks that stand out for me:

Cohen's "Hallelujah" - I had not heard this track before, and I have not heard a performance that equals kd's interpretation since - even from Cohen himself.

Mitchell's "A Case of You" - It is very hard to ... Read More

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Outstanding Quality
The warmth of KD Lang's voice combines with skilled musicians and first division songwriters to create one of the best albums you'll ever hear.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Smooth as silk, warm as chocolate
This is a lovely album, one which I have put off buying for years thanks to less than fulsome praise for it in the quality music monthlies at the time of its release. k.d. lang's career has been patchy and varied, moving from the torch and twang of her early country flavours and reaching a high point of chanteuse sophistication in Ingenue. This is her best offering since then; perfectly chosen songs with a Canadian songwriter theme that suit the effortless rise and fall of her voice. Close your eyes, ... Read More
