Amazon.co.uk Review: One of the defining albums of thrash metal, Master of Puppets is arguably Metallica's best album (as well as their last with bassist Cliff Burton). Focusing on the concept of power and abuses thereof, this is a collection of complex, intelligent music, played at about a hundred miles an hour. Not that these are short songs; this eight-song album clocks in at over an hour, which makes it all the more impressive that not one moment on this recording is boring. In tackling various approaches to their subject, Metallica is insightful lyrically as well as musically: "Welcome Home (Sanitarium)" is from the point of view of an institutionalised inmate and "Disposable Heroes" is the perspective of a soldier. --Genevieve Williams

Rating: - so so album
Not a bad album, but for me their previous album Ride the Lightning is better, hence 3 stars. In terms of song writing (music more than lyrics) the songs are a little dull and not immediately accessible. Guitar solos are a little random in terms of notes and scales played. Distortion bass starts to get a little boring after hearing the first two Metallica albums, not really doing anything new here. Drums, well we all know Lars isn't the greatest technical drummer around (St Anger has pretty much ... Read More
Rating: - A close 2nd to their best album - but still one of the best Metal albums of all time
Widely thought of now as Metallica's masterpiece............but not by me. Still, this is a terrific album, furious, ferocious and chock full of the huge riffery, solos and downright Metal-ness that, by that point in time, people expected from the 4 piece. It has a sadness too though that this was Cliff Burton's last album before his untimely death. But for me there is a lingering problem with 'Master' - some of the songs are overlong! I know that sounds silly, but 'Leper Messiah' is the worst example, ... Read More
Rating: - Joint best with Ride The Lightning
'Master of Puppets' is Metallica's best work as everyone knows. Full of powerful riffs and awesome lyrics. This is what really got Metallica noticed. Tracks:
'Battery': Awesome start to the album. This starts with a great piece of guitar work and then builds into one of Metallica's best known songs. A great riff and a track that is great to play live. 5/5
'Master of Puppets': One of my favourite Metallica tracks. Some may ay this is too long but I think it's just right. Awesome ... Read More
Rating: - Heroes of metal in the 80s! ! ! ! A Classic peice of Thrash Metal! ! ! !
To put this album in words this album is the definition off Thrash/Metal. When people think of Heavy Metal, they just simply think of screaming vocals and plain simple noise. Which is obviously Bulls**t, as we know there is much much more to Thrash/Metal then noise, this album for example. It shows that Thrash Metal/Metal can be clever to lyrically and musically. This is the album that probably started most Nu - Metal bands like Slipknot, Disturbed and sadly Korn. Here are my thoughts on this one hell off ... Read More
Rating: - It's true...
...that this is Metallica's greatest masterpiece. Personally I'd rate it just a little more that Ride The Lightning, due to its more momentuous moments, although they are both equally fantastic. Master Of Puppets at first scared me. It's dark, forboding and definitely evil. The lyrics to Battery, Welcome Home and The Thing That Should Not Be are incredibly sinister, yet the rest of the songs' lyrics display great meaning. Vocally, Hetfield matured on Puppets and refined his trademark growl! As for the musicianship, ... Read More
