Rating: 4 out of 5 stars - What? No 5 stars? Why? Read on...
I love Elkie Brooks' music and this certainly captures some of her finer moments.

But a 'Best Of' compilation can only cherry pick the tracks that have come from a long line of albums, which in themselves show the style of the singer at that time.

So whilst these tracks are great to listen to, do yourself a favour and pick a couple of her other albums *first* - then come back to this one to get all the great tracks in one place, but having the background to really appreciate ... Read More

Rating: 3 out of 5 stars - Great voice, always lacked good material.....
Ah, the female Rod Stewart or Chris Rea (in voice that is, not looks!!). Elkie Brooks has always been a little overlooked, which is a shame, as she has a fantastic smoky voice, in the vein of Bonnie Tyler. As this compilation shows though, her greatest hits are mostly cover versions of other people's, and she never carved out her own sound, or image, and so fell under the radar. Although a little 'easy listening', this compilation is an excellent introduction to a talented singer.

Rating: 4 out of 5 stars - The voice
Elkie has always been her best belting them out!! . But without doubt ELKIE can sing anything and boy can she sing. There is no other female singer in the U.K. that has this ability. And her live performances are stunning!!!

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - A great Artist
This may not be the ultimate collection of Elkie Brooks material, but wow can this lady sing.
Her version of Lilac wine is truly amazing and each song is a classic.
This is a must for every great record collection.

Rating: 1 out of 5 stars - Tepid stuff - get back to Whole Lotta Shakin'
The last reviwer - Harris P. Peters - couldn't be more wrong. Elkie has always been at her best when raunchy and rocking, and not when trying to do middle-of-the-road covers of average material.

Check out the stuff she did with Robert Palmer in Vinegar Joe - Rock and Roll Gypsies was recently reissued on CD - and you will see the real Elkie, hair flying, body wiggling and her voice eating through the scales and the emotions in a way that will make your knees weak and your back tingle.
